Downgrading PSP Firmware

Downgrade PSP Firmware

Many people are asking if its possible to downgrade their PSP’s firmware version from 2.5 and 2.6 to 1.5, to enable the playing of homebrew software. At the moment, downgrading PSP firmware from 2.5 and 2.6 is not possible, and users contemplating upgrading their PSP’s with firmware versions 1.5 and 2.0 should think carefully before upgrading if they make specific use of homebrew software.

Downgrading your PSP to firmware 1.5 from 2.5/2.6 is now very much possible, so long as you don’t own a TA-082 motherboard equipped PSP.

See

Downgrading PSP Firmware 2.5 and 2.6

Hopefully sometime in the future, the requirement to downgrade PSP firmware versions will be redundant, instead somebody will develop a way to play homebrew on these higher firmware versions. This will allow those using firmware 2.5 and 2.6 to enjoy the benefits of running the most upto date firmware versions while being able to benefit from the huge homebrew network of developers.

Sony should perhaps open their eyes to the huge potential of bedroom coders who are developing applications for the PSP that rather than weaken Sony’s position in the market but actually strengthen it by making the PSP desirable to a wider market. I don’t condone software theft, and the problem of earlier versions of the Sony PSP firmware being exploitable to play pirated games is an issue, but by stopping the homebrew software from running on the PSP Sony seem to have used a sledge hammer to crack a very small nut.

  3. Its looks like the need to downgrade from 2.6 to 2.0 may soon be a thing of the past, with the work that Fanjita has been doing over the last few weeks.

  7. Mike, check out the following list of homebrew applications and games that are working on firmware 2.6 – 2.6 Firmware Homebrew apps, so long as you have Grand Theft Auto you will be able to use at least some of the homebrew thats available at the moment.

  9. DO U NO ANY SITES I CAN GET HOMEBREW FOR FIRMWARE 2.5 ?????

  10. GARY K on February 24th, 2006 at 4:25 pm
  11. Gary, homebrew running for 2.6 should work on firmware 2.5.

I suggest you start by checking the 2.6 applications to see what does and doesn;t work.

  15. PSPs are getting so f***ing painful cos ov the firmware issue. Why can’t Sony just bring out new firmware which enables the playing of homebrew and uses a piracy protected ISO loader for demos and other cool stuff. They are putting so many people off buying them cos they are being f***ing stupid arses. Think of all the money they’d make this way. Stupid F*£%A$

  16. andy pipkin ov britain on March 2nd, 2006 at 3:46 pm
  17. Andy, the problem is that Sony want to ‘protect’ its position by removing the possibility of anyone getting an iso loader working.

Whether or not there actions are putting off that many peole from buying a PSP is debatable, I’m not sure that the general PSP buying public is really aware of the homebrew community and Sony’s attempts to stop it.

While we try and ensure everyone is informed about what the PSP is capable of, its only a small percentage of PSP owners who are really aware of the devices potential to run homebrew software.

  19. Dont you guys get it…

sony make the majority of thier money purely from console sales, they dont give a shit what people do after they buy it.
they have enough money from console sales to make another 1000 games. they just release new firmware to make it look like they give a shit about piracy. otherwise they would have put protection through hardware and not software. if anything they actually condone piracy, it boosts console sales after the word gets around you can pirate everything for it..

    it’s so damn obviously clear.

  20. Tom on March 3rd, 2006 at 11:40 am
  21. Tom, sorry but I’ve got to disagree with you.

I don’t believe companies make any money from the sale of consoles. Most are sold at a loss to the manufacturer, but this is recouped in software sales -

“Merrill Lynch Japan predicts Sony will lose more than $1 billion on hardware during its next-gen console’s first year on the market–a sum it may not be able to recoup.

According to the latest issue of Japanese magazine Toyo Keizai, Merrill Lynch Japan Securities has recently calculated an analysis that the production of a single PlayStation 3 console will cost Sony approximately 54,000 yen to make ($494), as of its initial release in 2006, but will be retailed at $399.

So in effect Sony do care about piracy, because anything that damages game sales hurts Sony in the pocket.

  29. Jordan on May 20th, 2006 at 5:00 pm
  30. Jordan, is that an X and O when you boot the PSP up?

Have you tried dropping the battery out, removing memory stick etc. Try booting the PSP up with no battery but the AC adapter plugged in.

What games required the 2.0+ firmware version to play – I thought the mph loader got around the 1.5 firmware version limitation?

  31. Dave on May 20th, 2006 at 6:32 pm
  32. I get the X and O when i try to run the update file, I have Fifa 06 but i cant play it through the emulator, it just says i need to update the firmware first??? Can you help???

  38. Hi, does anyone know if websites like this one that “Guarantee” the ability to downgrade actually work – I’m assuming not but has anyone checked ?

  40. I would guess that site such as the one mentioned above will guide you through downgrading a PSP running firmware 2.0 to firmware 1.5 and nothing else.

If there was a way to downgrade any other firmwared PSP, we would know about it.

If someone found a way to downgrade a PSP, it would be public knowledge within hours so its very unlikely that a method would be found and repeatedly charged for.

  50. HELP needed, downgraded from 2.0 to 1.5 which was fine, but started to have problems so decided to go back to 2.0 and then go back to 1.5. Upgraded to 1.52 as when i tried to go to 2.0 the screen is blank of text with options to press X or O. Pressing O brings up the exit option and pressing X brings you nowhere, like I said no text on teh screen at all so cant see if it is prompting me for something.
    Anybody got any advice?

  56. .Yeah but what about the people like me who have version 2.82 or higher. Is there a downgrader for it. I’ve only heard of one but you have to pay for a video which seems to be to be a rip-off. Is there only one way to downgrade.

  57. Sasuke Uchiha on January 24th, 2007 at 6:17 am
  58. There is no way of downgrading a PSP with a firmware higher than 2.80 at the moment.

I will update this (old) post with some newer details when I get a moment, but for now, I would hold onto your money, as any downgrader that becomes available for PSP’s with firmware 2.81+ it will be available freely on the internet. You should not pay for any software for downgrading your PSP, that includes anyone trying to sell the software on eBay.

  59. Dave on January 24th, 2007 at 7:58 am
  60. HI guys any news about 2.82 ???? any downgrades yet?
    thanks

  61. Andy on June 14th, 2007 at 9:55 am
  62. Andy See this post.

2.82 is easily downgradeable, just need to upgrade to firmware 3.03 first. You can then install the latest 3.40OE firmware by Dark_AleX.
