PSP Firmware 3 Hints
Since I wrote this way back in January 2006, the PSP has had a few firmware updates, and this week saw the release of firmware 3.01, swiftly followed by 3.01. See this link for some more information.
PSP-News is reporting that it recieved an email hinting that the next Sony PSP firmware version (3.0?) will see streaming radio, downloadable game demos and Macromedia Flash player being added to the PSP’s arsenal of multimedia capabilities.
The streaming radio is of great interest to me, the thought of being able to stream audio via wi-fi opens up a whole new avenue for the PSP. Being able to stream direct from either the internet (radio) or PC (mp3 collection) means that the PSP could be used as a hub for all your audio needs. Plug it into your hi-fi and stream content directly from the internet without having to burn it onto CD’s to play elsewhere in the house.
Adding Macromedia Flash compatability to the web browser for the PSP will also be great news – this will open up a whole new entertainment mechanism for PSP users – Flash games. As well as being used for gaming, Macromedia Flash will also allow webmasters and designers to create visually stunning websites that complement the look and feel of the PSP. Imagine a site such as 2advanced being made to scale for the PSP browser. Although not particularly content rich, the interface coupled with a content management system would make browsing on the Sony PSP a joy.

Yes, March looks like a possibility. It will give them enough time to refine the update whilst not appearing as though they are purely reacting to the latest developments on the homebrew scene.

Its looks like all the photos of the latest firmware are probably hoaxes, and I doubt Sony itself would leak details of what its going to do with the next version.
Remember that Sony will be keen to hold back some functionality that the PSP may be capable of until a later firmware release – its got to keep something back for when the next firmware is cracked and needs patching again.

Hi Mel, yes, it is indeed firmware 2.7 that came out around a month ago, this post was originally written back in January when future firmware versions were based on guesswork!

There is NO firmware 3!
Currently firmware 2.81 is all anyone will be having until the Playstation 3 is up for release.
Sony Corp will save extra ps3 functionality for when the initial sales have fallen off and they can encourage more sales through dual game unit co-operation

psp firmware 3.00 is now been released and this can be downloaded using the psp’s cool update feature!

Thanks Rhys, firmware 3.0 is indeed out (in fact its now firmware 3.01).
I guess its time to start thinking about firmware 4.0 and what that might add to the PSP’s capabilities…
