PSP locking up

A few times now I’ve been playing World Tour Soccer and my PSP has locked up when coming out of the game. I get the black screen with the ‘Please Wait’ message, but it remains on the screen and doesn’t return back to the PSP menu.

When I have tried to reset the PSP by switching the power off and on, it doesn’t do anything, the powerswitch is disabled.

The only solution I’ve found is to take the battery out and then put it back in the PSP, which leads to a moment of panic as thoughts of a bricked PSP and the prospect of explaing to my wife why I need to buy a new PSP race through my mind. Fortunately the few times I’ve had to perform this operation the PSP has come back to life without any problem, but I can’t help but think there will be long term damage if I keep having to do this.
