PSP2 to lose UMD format?

PSP2 on its way? If the rumours are to be believed, Samsung are making NAND Flash Memory for the PSP2, and have also claimed that the UMD player will be binned in favour of running everything off Flash Memory.

In a way I could believe this, as the capacity of the Flash Memory cards gets bigger and the costs of production fall, it makes sense to make use of the small and lightweight Memory Stick Duo’s rather than the more bulky UMD disks.

On the other hand of course, Sony have invested heavily in the UMD format and would presumably be unwilling to write off those costs.

The UMD format does have its benefits for Sony at the moment, such as the security they offer from piracy. Whether this security will remain in the long run is to be seen, but will Sony ditch a secure format for one that has allowed a multitude of homebrew applications and games to be run on the PSP?
