PSP SCUMMVM Emulator
In between all the other things I’ve been playing around with on the PSP, I’ve finally managed to get the SCUMMVM (Script Creation Utility for Manic Mansion Virtual Machine) for PSP software working on my PSP.
This software allows you to run nearly all your favourite Lucasarts point-and-click games, and also those games created for the SCUMMVM engine.
The official SCUMMVM website has downloads for most system, including the PSP (look for the PSP-Package on the downloads page), and also has Beneath a Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen games for download. These games are freeware and a great introduction to the point-and-click genre.
Getting the software running on your PSP couldn’t be easier, so long as you follow the basic instructions (thats a hint at where I was getting it wrong), you just uncompress the downloaded SCUMMVM file and copy the appropriate SCUMMVM-PSP folder to the game directory on your PSP. I use the single-eboot folder version on my PSP running firmware 2.6.
You then copy the freeware games into the SCUMMVM-PSP directory and you are then ready to start playing. Note that Beneath a Steel Sky requires a separate download of the sky.cpt file from the SCUMMVM website which should replace the version that comes with the freeware game.
Once all the software is copied to your Memory Stick Duo, fire up the GTA eLoader and then select the SCUMMVM option. You then need to add the games you have copied to the PSP’s Memory Stick (note that when you select the relevant game folder, it appears as though the folder is empty – this is correct, just select ok and it will add the game). You should not need to change any of the default options, you should now be able to start playing your selected game.
The SCUMMVM engnie will let you play some classic point-and-click games, including the Monkey Island series, Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle and Broken Sword. These games are available to purchase on the web.
