PSP Core Age Group Details

PocketGamer has some interesting information (from Sony of America at E3) regarding the age range of PSP owners.

Surprisingly, the statistics from registration cards returned to Sony suggests that the majority of PSP owners are in the 13 to 17 age group.

Conventional wisdom has always been that PSP’s audience has been 25+ year-old; something these figures throw doubt on.

While the figures taken at face value would suggest that the original assumption that the 25 and over age group would form the bulk of PSP purchasers is wrong, it may be that the figures themselves are slightly skewed.

Firstly, there appears to be no reference to number of registrations received by Sony compared to sales of the Sony PSP. That instantly puts the figures presented into question; if only 10% of owners have registered their PSP, the figures may not be representitive of the actual total age spread.

Wisdom dictates that with a random sample, it should be possible form a reasonable assumption about the trend of PSP Sales, but if we consider the type of product the PSP is, and its price, it may be that those who are in the 25+ age group and have bought a PSP don’t feel the need to register their PSP with Sony. The likelyhood of wanting to register is going to fall on those people reliant on the warranty, which may be those of a younger age with less disposable income.
