I’ve had a few emails about a PSP Firmware Downgrader that is doing the rounds, asking if its legitamate and will actually downgrade their PSP’s running firmware 2.6 and 2.7.

The answer to this is NO, as far as I am aware, there is no downgrader for PSP’s running the later firmware versions (2.01+). The software that is currently being promoted as a firmware downgrader has not be proven by any independent reliable source, so should not be used.

If you hear about a downgrader, and the news doesn’t come from a source such as this site, or a moderator at one of the PSP forums, then do not assume its anything other than a hoax until it has been confirmed.

There are various people in the PSP community that either unintentionally or maliciously spread rumours that have no truth to them, or worse, encourage you to run software on your PSP that may do damage to the underlying operating system.

If a downgrader does become available for the PSP that actually works, you can be sure that it will only be promoted once it has been thoroughly tested by an independent source on a number of PSP’s, and proven to do no damage.

A downgrader for PSP’s running firmware 2.01+ is currently not possible because there is no access to the required system calls or flash0, where the firmware is held on the PSP. Its unlikely that a downgrader will ever be available unless another exploit in the PSP system is found.
