PSP Firmware 3.01 Released

I’ve been so busy of late that the news of the PSP firmware 3.0 release just slipped by without me noticing. And since its release, Sony have patched a small bug and released 3.01, which has got to be one of the quickest turn arounds ever – although I guess it could have been a case of one of the developers forgetting to remove that pauseN statement from their test build….

I’ve not upgraded my PSP to this latest firmware (after all, why would I want to lose out on the homebrew scene?) and having read the following quote, I can’t see much incentive for anyone else to upgrade either -

PlayStation Games – Here’s the big tip you’ve been waiting for. Finally, Sony is going to drop their highly anticipated PlayStation One emulator onto the PSP. From the manual however, there seems to be a unavoidable catch. If you don’t have a PS3, your not going to be enjoying PlayStation One games emulating on Sony’s PlayStation One emulator for PSP anytime soon. From the manual it states that you must connect to the Playstation Online store with your PSP connected to the PlayStation 3 in order to download and play the games. In addition, they mention that you can in fact share the games, but you must activate the other system in the Friends menu as a PS3 Network Account.

So lets read that again, slowly. To be able to download PS1 games for your PSP, you need to purchase the games via the Playstation Online store. Fine. But you need to own a PS3 to do this. Not so fine.

Once again, Sony shoot themselves in the foot, this time with something the size of a tank. Having splashed out a large sum of money to buy a PSP, owners are now expected to buy a PS3 so they can have access to 10 year old games that aren’t that good once you remove the rose tinted glasses?

Sorry Sony, but if I’m going to be stupid enough to spend money on a PS3, why would I want to then download PS1 games – if I’ve got a PS3 I’m going to be playing that….
