First PSone Games for the PSP

Those people in the USA and Japan lucky enough to have bought a PS3, and who also own a Sony PSP, will be rubbing their hands together in anticipation of playing the first batch of PSone games to be made available for download.

The list is as follows:

  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Cool Boarders
  • Hot Shots Golf 2
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 2

I’m guessing SOny will drip feed the games onto the download service as they see fit, and will not simply flood the store with all the games they have tested and ensured work correctly.

Initial reports are that the games have no extra functionality (such as wi-fi) which is to be expected. Controls are customised (to an extent) for the PSP, with games having a number of different configurations to ensure everyone is happy.

Some people are saying that you can select the screen size of the gaem, although even on the largest option there are black bands on the screen. Anyone who has played the standard UMD version of the Sega Genesis Collection will have observed this for themselves.

The games themselves are being sold for $5.99USD, which equates to around £2.99GBP – alot cheaper than I was expecting and a real bonus to those people who want to play the official PSone emulator on their PSP.

As for the choice of games, I’m not sure I’d be intersted in any of those listed, the last two are available natively on the PSP, which I hope wouldbe a more satisfying gaming experience than the PSone emulator versions.

I’m of the opinion that the real market for PSone games lies in those fondly remembered classics that you used to play alot but are no longer available in updated form on the current generation of handhelds/consoles.

While I fondly remember playing the first two Gran Turismo games for hours on end, firing them up on my PS2 reminds me how much games have moved on since those early days, and I can’t see myself spending much (if any) time going back and playing them, even if it is on my PSP.

If you are keen to play PSone games on your PSP, I’d love to hear your thoughts on which games you want the most, and why it appeals to you to play older games that you’ve possibly already completed once on its original console.
