Installing music on your PSP couldn’t be easier, although there is one important consideration to make. Music, even in mp3 format, can take up a lot of space on your Memory Stick Pro Duo, so I recommend that you invest in at least a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo if you are thinking about using the PSP to listen to a lot of tracks while on the road.

Fortunately, the Sony PSP is quite flexible in the music formats it will play, with the device not just limited to ATRAC files, and is incredibly straight forward as regards to copying the music onto the PSP. Anyone who has used Sony’s SonicStage software will understand how complex you can make music management when it really doesn’t need to be.

To copy music across to the PSP from your PC, connect the USB cable (to both the PSP and the PC!), turn the PSP on, and select the USB Connection options -

You should then see connected screen -

You then need to open an explorer session in Windows. You should see the PSP listed as a ‘Removable Device’.

IF you then expand the device, you should see a directory listing that includes the folder PSP. Expand this folder and you should see listed, amongst others, a MUSIC folder.

It is into this folder you need to copy your MP3 music. You can copy the music into a subfolder, so you would have \ PSP \ Music \ Gorillaz – Demon Days \ intro.mp3 etc

You can now disconnect your PSP from the PC (hit the O button). Browse to the Music folder and you should see the music you just copied across -

Select the album by pressing X and you will see a list of all tracks within the album. Now select the track you wish to play.

Pressing the Traingle button will bring up a context menu, that allows you to skip forwards, backwards, pause etc.

If you are using firmware 3.00+, or Dark_AleX’s custom firmware, the music player now has a visualisation option. Selecting this allows you to choose a background animation to play while listening to music, much like Windows Media Player -

And thats it. It really is quite straight forward to get music onto your PSP.
