How to install Doom on your PSP
I get quite a few emails asking how to install the ever popular and cult classic PC game Doom on the PSP. Doom was first ported over to the PSP back in the days when the only firmware options for the discerning PSP owner were 1.0 or 1.5, but it runs just as well under the latest custom firmware versions (3.03OE-C at time of writing).
Installing Doom on the PSP is straight forward, and so long as you have a PSP capable of running homebrew software, should take no more the two minutes to get up and running.
The first thing to do is download the Doom software for the PSP. I’ve put together a single package that can be used on any firmware from 1.5 through to 3.03OE-C (and probably any custom firmware that will be released in the future).
Download : Doom for PSP (1.5 through to 3.03OE)
Alternatively, if you want the original Doom package and separate Doom1.wad (more on this in a moment), you can also download them from here :
Download : Doom v0.05
Download : Shareware Doom Wad File
The single Doom for PSP package has the shareware Doom1.wad file included. This file is what drifves the shareware version of the game on the PC, and is used in this version of Doom for the PSP. If you have the full original Doom game, you can replace the Doom1.wad file with the Doom1.wad file from the full version.
This tutorial assumes you have downloaded the Doom for PSP version.
First step, after downloading the file, is to unzip it to a directory on your PC. When extracted, you should see the following files :
The two directories are the items we are interested in, so turn on your PSP and connect it to your PC via the USB cable. Copy the two folders, Doom and Doom%, and paste them into the GAME150 folder on your PSP (or GAME directory if you are using firmware 1.5).
And thats all there is to installing Doom on the PSP. If you want to use any of the custom Doom levels that you can find on the internet, you need to place them in the WADS directory within the Doom folder.
To run the game, simply go to the game menu option on your PSP and select Doom.
When the game runs, you will first see a menu where you need to choose the game to launch. This simply means selecting the correct WAD file and pressing the start button. Press the down arrow and you will see DOOM1.WAD highlighted in red. Press the X button, and then press START.
Doom will load and you will see the classic Doom front screen. Press X to bring up the context menu and use the analogue stick to select your option. Press START on New Game, then START on the level you wish to play. The shareware version that I’ve included in the download will only allow you to play on the first ‘Knee-Deep in the Dead’ level. You then need to select the difficulty level.
Controls for Doom are self explanatory once you start playing it, but in general, movement is with the analogue stick, Square and Cross are for strafing left and right, Triangle is for the map, Right-Shoulder button is fire, and the direction buttons swap weapons.
Enjoy…

Great, thanks for this Dave. It took seconds to install.
Having just moved to 3.03 OE-C I wanted something simple to test the firmware with as any PS1 game I tried to convert hung my PSP (PAL versions seem to cause problems). I want to try SCUMMVM next.
I see that Dark Alex has 3.10 OE-A out. I will hang fire on installing it as Sony have announced in Japan that another upgrade is coming soon to patch a glitch in one of the PSP games.

Thanks Mike, glad it helped you.
Enjoy SCUMMVM, its a great engine, and the PSP handles some of the old LucasArts games really well.
