PSP Sales – The First Two Years

Interesting post over at PSPFanBoy that highlights just how well the PSP has done in it terms of sales in its first two years. As we all know, the PSP has been criticised from nearly all sides for poor sales figures, yet when compared to other electronic gaming devices, this hardly seems fair.

The post over at PSPFanboy has some nice charts, so pop over there to get the full picture, but in summary, the PSP appears to stand up to the competition in terms of sales very well.

The numbers and charts are provided by VG Charts, and they document a truth that may be hard to swallow. Please note that these numbers only cover US sales. Regardless, the following data should provide compelling evidence that PSP is not a failure, at least in terms of units sold.

The really interesting comparison is the one between the PSP and the Nintendo DS, probably the PSP’s biggest rival.

Looking at the first two years of sales of PSP and the first two years of DS, one can see that PSP has actually sold better than the cumulative sales of DS and DS Lite. While the recent months have been in Nintendo’s favor, it’s foolish to think that Sony is trailing that far behind.

This is great news for fans of Sony’s handheld, as the Nintendo DS has always been held up as the shining example of what a great handheld gaming device should be.

I’ve always been defensive of the PSP when it comes to talking sales figures, not surprising given that I run this site. However, I am a realist and know that the PSP does have some downsides. However, I can hope that the PSPFanBoy article goes some way to quietening down the dissenters at the back who try to shoot the PSP down at every opportunity.
