PSPFanboy Top 5 Racing Games

PSPFanboy has started doing a series on the ‘Top 5′ games on the PSP, each day concentrating on a different gaming genre.

It was something I was planning on writing myself, but never got round to, so at least I’ve now been saved the bother.

While each individual ‘Top 5′ will have its pros and cons, I’ve picked up on the ‘Top 5′ racing titles, as its one of the areas I’m most interested in.

The PSPFanboy Top 5 :

1. (tie) Ridge Racer/WipEout Pure
2. Burnout Legends
3. TOCA Race Driver 2
4. Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
5. Twisted Metal: Head-On

No surprise to me that WipEout Pure and Ridge Racer are a tthe top of the list, these are the pure eye candy of the racing world, featuring great graphics, smooth gameplay and really good soundtracks.

I have to disagree with Burnout Legends appearing in the lst, as its a game I’ve played and detested, mainly due to the game style. I would have placed TOCA Race Driver 2 higher, and included World Rally Championship in the list, as its a very playable rally game once you get passed the twitchy steering response.

I’m surprised to see no Need for Speed game in the list, as both Underground Rivals and Carbon both have some good moments, and offer more than a game such as Twisted Metal, which doesn’t fit that well into the racing genre.

Of course, everybody will have different opinions on what should and shouldn’t be included, and once Test Drive Unlimited, Gran Turismo 4 Mobile (yeah, right) and TOCA 3 are released, I would hope the top 5 would change again.

For the record, my top 5 would be as follows:

  • 1. WipEout Pure
  • 2. TOCA Race Driver 2
  • 3. Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast
  • 4. World Rally Championship
  • 5. Ridge Racer

Games that didn’t make the cut to my Top 5:

  • 1. Need for Speed Underground Rivals
  • 2. Juiced Eliminator
  • 3. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
  • 4. Need for Speed Carbon
  • 5. Twisted Metal Head On

  1. I have WipeOut Pure.. and all I can say is: a Breath-taking game..
It’s also nice to test how the buttons work together in the PSP as you utilize every single button while playing that game.

  2. WipEout Pure is still my favourite PSP racing game, which is both good and bad, considering its one of the first PSP games I got.

The fact that it is so good means that other games have got to try harder to match its style and pace, the downside is that its been well over 12 months and nothing has really come that close, other than Ridge Racer, another game that has been around for ages.

I think we can split the racing genre down into out-and-out racers (WipEout Pure, Ridge Racer, WRC, F1), rpg’esq games (GTA, Test Drive Unlimited), Arcade (Eliminator, Burnout, OutRun) and Driving (need For Speed series etc).

The pure racing genre is a little thin on the ground, and other than Ridge Racer 2, had nothing of real note released in the last 12 months.
