Downgrading PSP’s to firmware 1.5 then upto 3.40OE

Yesterday I had the pleasure of downgrading/upgrading two PSP’s to the latest 3.40OE firmware (hi Pete and Dave!). One of the PSP’s was a native firmware 1.5 unit (Japanese), so just needed to be upgraded to 3.40OE, the other was a TA-082 motherboard PSP with firmware 2.81, so this was upgraded to 3.03 and then downgraded back to 1.5 using the Noobz downgrader, that automatically patches the TA-082 motherboard.

I must admit that I find it more nerve racking downgrading/upgrading other peoples PSP’s than it is doing my own, even with reassurances that if the PSP bricks its not my fault.

Regardless, both PSP’s are now running firmware 3.40OE, so can now use the PSone emulator thats built into the latest firmware, and for the owner of the PSP that had firmware 1.5, can now easily browse the web, use custom wallpapers, and play the latest games without having to use DevHook, amongst other things.

I’d love to say the whole process of downgrading/upgrading was smooth and trouble free, but there were a few issues. The Japanese PSP running firmware 1.5 didn’t want to boot up after being upgraded to 3.40OE, which led to a few moments of panic (on my part, I hid it well), but entering the recovery menu, setting a few of the options to disabled under the advanced menu option did the trick, and it rebooted and worked afterwards.

The 2.81 firmware PSP was even stranger, with a real hicup after downgrading to firmware 1.5. The screen refused to stay lit, and although you could hear the button press beep sound, there was nothing to look at. Flicking the power off and on revealed the screen, but it instantly went off. A bit of fiddling later, and hitting the screen button that you can use to shut off the LCD if you hold it down seemed to do the trick and the screen sprang into life. Very strange. I quickly updated it to 3.40OE and its now working perfectly.

While these initial moments of getting a fresh PSP downgraded/upgraded can be nerve racking, and you can experience some issues, once that OE firmware is installed, there is at least the recovery menu option to save you from potential long term issues.

Hopefully Pete and Dave will be happy with their revised firmware PSP’s, I’ve personally not looked back since I installed 3.03OE, and I’m now on 3.40OE with no issues either in the upgrade process or in its day to day use.

  7. Do you know how to get 3.40oe for a european version of the psp, as the website is .co.uk I imagine you are english. How did you do it???

  9. umm, with 3.40OE can you put the homebrew themes onto it and how

  11. Liquid – You need to have a PSP with firmware of 3.10 or lower to be able to downgrade to firmware 1.5 and then back up to 3.40OE. If you are on any firmware above 3.10 then you don’t currently have a mechanism to downgrade your PSP. All you can do is wait until one is developed.

It dones’t matter if your PSP is EU, USA or Japan, they can all run 3.40OE so long as they are not on a firmware higher than 3.10.

  13. Hi Dave, do you have a detailed tutorial on how to upgrade an already OE PSP (3.03 OE-C) to 3.40 OE-A?

For a noob like me I didn’t understand where to execute the program that’ll generate the DATA.DXAR file once all the necessary folders were copied. Is this under the recovery menu?

Moreover, where can I get a 1.5 and 3.40 updater? Do you know of a website where I can get these?

    Thanks a lot.

  17. Dave,
I have a 1.50 PSP, I have been using DevHook on it for ages and have never had any issues. My question is what would be the benefit/advantage for me to move up to 3.40OE? Not to sure if you have covered this before, but thought I would ask as am worried I’m missing out on something??
    Thanks
    Jay

  19. Jay,

There are a number of reason why I feel that the OE firmware is superior to the 1.5 + devhook option.

The first is that the OE firmware is permenant as far as hard and soft resets of the PSP are concerned. With devhook, if you hard reset your PSP, it always goes back to firmware 1.5 and you then have to load up devhook again to emulate your selected firmware version.

Secondly, the OE firmware gives you the recovery menu, which means that you can revert back to firmware 1.5 at any point should you wish, including circumstances where the PSP has semi-bricked because you’ve run some homebrew that has accidently written to flash when it shouldn’t.

Thirdly, I find the OE firmware ‘cleaner’ to use. If you are happy to constantly fiddle to setup the devhook to work the way you want, then maybe upgrading to OE isn’t right for you. I much prefer to have a memory stick free of clutter, so no need for multiple devhook versions running different firmware versions, just homebrew games and apps sitting in a folder that take up very little space.

Its been a while since I looked into DevHook, but I always remember it being an extra layer of complexity between the PSP and the software you want to run, whereas OE firmware’s remove this ‘middleman’. If you are emulating standard 3.03+ firmwares via devhook then you have access to all the functions of that firmware, but the OE versions have opened up the ability to play PSone games via the emulator without the need for a PS3 or access to the Sony online store.

  21. I Got this from wikipedia :

“3.40 OE was released on April 20, 2007 This release includes the same changes made in 3.30 OE-A’ except it now uses the 3.40 firmware. If you try to run the web browser the PlayStation Portable will be semi bricked and recovery mode must then be used. 3.30 OE (all versions) are not affected by this bug.”

    I think I’ll wait for a stable release of 3.40 OE-A
