New Deep Red PSP Slim Model for Japan
Sony have announced a new PSP pack is going to be available in Japan, called “Deep Red”. The new special edition of the PSP is going to come in two packs, a $199 budget pack, that contains the Deep Red PSP and a 32mb Pro Duo Memory Stick, and a $260 Premium pack, that contains the Deep Red PSP, a 1 Seg TV Tuner and a 1gb Pro Duo Memory Stick.
Its unclear at the moment as to whether the Deep Red package will come to Europe, if it does its likely to be only the budget pack. There is talk of there being a brighter red version being packaged with Spiderman3 on UMD, but this has not yet been confirmed.
The japanese Deep Red PSP is going to be available from the 13th December, to coincide with the Holiday shopping period. I must admit to quite liking the look of this Deep Red version, with its festive colouring its sure to be a big hit. Its a shame Sony are reluctant to release limited edition packs of the PSP in the UK and Europe – I guess that the market for ‘collectable’ limited edition packs is bigger in Japan than elsewhere in the world.
Sony have also announced the release of a new PS2 model. Coming seven years after the initial PS2 release, the new PS2 will be available in black, silver and white, and have a built-in AC adaptor, unlike the previous slim PS2 model, that had to have a separate power supply. While a built in AC adapater cuts down on the number of wires and boxes littering the space under your tv, I remember using an external AC supply on my Spectrum 128 to warm my feet on cold winter days.
My own PS2 is the original phat model (a bit like my PSP really), and I’ve no intention of changing it (it only comes out occasionally for a few laps of GT4). However, those of you who are in need of a replacement for your exisitng PS2, or who are still using a PSone and have yet to make the leap to the next generation technology (by the way, you do know the PS3 is now available, don’t you?), then you will be pleased to hear the new PS2 will be priced roughly the same as the outgoing model, which is still a cheap way of getting onboard the Sony FanWagon.
