4GB Memory Stick Pro Duos now £28.99, I’ll take two please
I’m off on holiday in a few weeks (yay, off to find some sunshine), which means I’m going to get opportunity to play some PSP games, listen to some new music, and watch some films.
Now, as you may be aware, I like to watch films straight off the Memory Stick Pro Duo (I’m a big fan of the Xvid4PSP software for converting DVD’s to PMP format). And these days, my 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo doesn’t really cut it - a couple of long films can pretty much fill the cars.
Therefore, I thought I’d have a look to see what prices the new 8GB Memory cards are, in case they’ve now become more affordable. A quick check on my favourite Memory Stick retailer, MobyMemory, shows that the Sony 8GB Memory Stick PRO DUO card is now £103.99, cheaper than it was, but still way out of my price league.
However, the SanDisk 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo is only £28.99, which means that even if I bout two, its still cheaper than buying a single Sony 8GB card. While I’d prefer to minimise the number of cards I have to carry around, they are hardly the bulkieset of items, and to save £pound;46.00 in the process, it makes sense to get the two smaller cards.
While having 8GB or 12GB of storage seems excessive, it does mean that I can convert films at the highest possible quality and not be too concerned with them fitting onto the Memory Stick. Added to which, I can add some films on to a stick for my son, which should keep him entertained on the flight and in the evenings.
With Sony releasing bigger and bigger memory sticks, I had expected the 8GB card to have come down in price further than it has, but I’m delighted to see that the 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duos (even if they are SanDisk and not Sony ones) are now over half the price I paid for mine 12+ months ago.

SanDisk cards are very reliable, I use a 2GB SanDisk CF card for my Sony Alpha 100 SLR and it works fantatsically. I use to sell a lot of SanDisk SD cards at my previous work as well and not very many came back.
I think that its highly likey that we’ll see the small Sony branded sticks drop in price soon. Its a Sony tradition to slash the price of older stock once the newer models hit the scene.

Daniel,
I’ve been using the SanDisk CF cards in my Nikon, and I’m really pleased with both the speed and reliability.
The SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo that I’ve been using for about 18 months is also extremely good - with a huge amount of read/write access and constant swapping between the PSP and my card reader in my PC, its shown no sign of having any issues.
Given the price difference between comparable size cards, I think I’d always choose the SanDisk card over any other.
