How to Resize a Standard Wallpaper for the PSP

PSP for Beginners While for some people being able to manipulate images in photoshop or similar is quite straight forward, some people struggle with the basics, so this tutorial will show you how to resize a standard windows size wallpaper to fit onto the Sony PSP and be used as a background.

It uses photoshop as the image manipulation software, but any iamge editing software will be able to do the same, although the menu contexts may be slightly different.

The first step is to fire up Photoshop and open the image you want to use as a PSP wallpaper. For this example, I’m using one of the Windows Vista style wallpapers, which, at its full size, is 1600px by 1200px.

The above screen shot shows that the image is being viewed at 33% of its original size. A quick check of the image size itself [ Images > Image Size ] shows the following dialog box -

An image size of 1600px by 1200px is way too large for our purposes. We only want an image that is 480px by 272px.

We now have a choice, we can resize the image down to fit the PSP and then crop off any remaining excess from the canvas, or we can simply cut out a section of the wallpaper to fit 480px by 272px exactly.

Either way, we need to use the Marquee tool and set its fixed size to 480px by 272px. If the Tools box isn’t present, click on the [ Window > Tools ] menu and it should appear. At the top of the tools menu, there is the Marquee Tool -

This should be selected (leave on the rectangular option) and the context menu across the top of photoshop will show the Marquee Tool options. We want to select the fixed size option from the drop down menu, and set the width to 480px and the height to 272px.

You should now have the Marquee Tool selected, and its size fixed to 480px by 272px, the same size as the PSP screen (and therefore its wallpaper).

If you now want to cut out an element of the wallpaper you are resizing to use as a PSP wallpaper, simply click on the image and position the Marquee Tool in the correct place -

Now select the crop option from the menu [ Image > Crop ] and the section you have selected should be left and everything else removed -

And thats you PSP Wallpaper. Simply save the image [ File > Save-As ] and save into the Photo folder on your PSP. You then need to open the image on your PSP using the photo browser, click the triangle button and select ‘Set as wallpaper’ option.

However, simply cropping out part of the image may not be what you want. What if you want to have the whole wallpaper on your PSP?

You now need to resize the original image before using the Marquee Tool. Open up the image size dialog box [ Images > Image Size ] and where it says 1600px (or whatever the width of your standard image is) and enter 480 (width of a PSP wallpaper) and press return. So long as your image is wider than it is tall, you should have an image resized to the correct width, but probably the wrong height -

In this case, the width is correct at 480px, but the height of 360px is incorrect. We now need to use the Marquee Tool and crop the image to 480px by 272px.

Select crop [ Image > Crop ] and the image should now by the correct size for your PSP.

Again, you now need to save the image onto your PSP and select the image to be your background image (instructions above).

If you want to partially resize an image before cropping, simply select a larger number than 480px but lower than the current image size. If the image you are using is not in a landscape format, you may need to play around with the resize numbers, as sometimes you can resize to a point where the image isn’t wide or tall enough to fill the 480px by 272px requirement.
