PSP Camera Review

Techag have got a review of the PSP Camera.

I got this a couple of moths ago at Play Asia and I love it! In Japan it is called Chotto Shot, in Europe it is called Go Cam and in US it is called…………nothing cause Sony still hasen’t released it here! It sucks but if you a sucker for cool PSP accesories, then you have to import this one.

I’ve not seen one of these cameras in the UK yet, although to be honest I’ve not really looked. While I can see the novelty value in having a camera on the PSP, I think it would end up like the camera in my phone, which is hardly ever used.

The fact that the camera sticks out of the PSP, making it impossible to put in its case with out removing it each time means I’d end up never using it. Its not the sort of thing I’d remember to take out with me unless it was permenantly attached to the PSP.

Feature wise, the camera is 1.3 megapixel with a 28mm lens (making it a 35mm equivalent). 1.3 megapixels is probably sufficient for a novelty device, but most camera phones these days are upwards of at least 2.0 megapixels, and compact cameras are now available boasting 7.1 megapixels, so releasing a device with only 1.3 megapixels is hardly going to get peoples imagination firing.

Out of the box you get the camera and the software, but since I don’t know Japanese I do not use it. The built-in microphone is one of the best I have ever used for recording video. Also it is perfect for making small videos which you can upload to your blog or website. Unfortunately it is not all perfect. The picture quality is OK from a distance, but awful if zoomed in. Also, it is almost impossible to take pictures in the dark. Other than that, it is an
awesome addition to your PSP.

Sounds to me like its really lacking in every department. It maybe OK for producing ropey looking YouTube videos, but for anything else I think you may end up disappointed. The PSP Camera is one addition to my PSP I won’t be getting anytime soon.
