Sony PSP Online Store Now Open in the US

Playstation Store

The Sony Playstation Portable online store is now open in the US, allowing PSP owners to download a selection of game titles, including Wipeout Pure and Syphon Filter: Combat Ops as the first fully fledged PSP games, along with 16 PSone games that can be played on the PSP.

There will also be themes, wallpapers and videos to download. The online store requires that you download and use a windows application to transfer the content over to your PSP - I assume this has some mechanism in place to ensure that you do not illegally re-distribute the content amongst your friends and family. Those of you using a Mac will have to wait until Sony deem you sufficiently important enough to create a Mac compatible application.

The games are prices at $10 for the PSP games, which at the current exchange rate works out at just under £5 a game (originally sold here in the UK at between £29.99 and £34.99, then sold on the platinum label at £19.99), and the PSone games are available at $6, which is roughly £3.

It will be intersting to see if the store retains these prices when its made available in the UK - I would expect there to be a price hike in real terms, with games likely to be £10 and £6 respectively. No doubt the cost of setting the store up in the UK will be blamed for the increase in the cost of the games to UK PSP owners.

  1. I’m very interested in Syphon Filter: Combat Ops. I haven’t read much about it yet.

Theres an example of the service that can be seen in video form here:

    Looks rather efficient.
