Sony PSP XMB Customising - RCO File Contents List

If you are interested in modifying your PSP using the RCO Icon Editor, you may find the following list of what is held in which of the RCO files handy. This really only applies to people using the custom firmware 3.03OE and 3.10OE on their PSP.

To access the RCO files on your PSP you need to connect via the recovery menu, by hard resetting your PSP and the booting it up with the right shoulder button pressed. You then need to select Advanced and then USB (Flash0).

The RCO files are then in the vsh/resource directory. Font mods require the ltn0.pgf be replaced in the font directory.

Note: If you are looking to customise your PSP by making your own graphics, you need to either use an already exising custom theme, or obtain the decrypted RCO files from an earlier firmware version (less than 2.71). This is because the RCO files from later firmware versions are not decrypted sufficiently to be used in customising the XMB.

List of RCO Files:

  • topmenu_plugin.rco
  • Contains all the main and submenu XMB icons and associated text. This is the RCO file most commonly used in XMB customisation. With the release of the 1.12 version of the RCO Icon Editor, the text as well as the icons can be altered easily.
  • system_plugin.rco
  • Contains the Line for the Memory Stick Information, the music information graphics and the XMB sound effects.
  • Game_plugin.rco
  • Contains the Game Load and Corrupt Game icons.
  • system_plugin_bg.rco
  • Contains the XMB Wave effect (when you don’t use the wallpaper function). Can be edited using the TGA Wave Injector
  • Photo_plugin.rco
  • All the icons relating to the photo browser (load icon, album icon, photo information).
  • msvideo_plugin.rco
  • All the icons relating to the movie viewer (load icon, movie information).
  • music_plugin.rco
  • All the icons relating to the music player (track numbers, msuic format icons, album icons, photo information).
  • opening_plugin.rco
  • Contains the ‘coldboot’ information. Coldboot is the screen you see when you first turn your PSP on after a hard reset (assuming you’ve not disabled it in your custom firmware options). Altering the opening_plugin.rco will result in you not being able to play the PSX emulator.
  • system_plugin_fg.rco
  • Contains the battery icon, the ‘busy’ icon (the one in the bottom right of the screen when the system is doing something), the lock icon.
  • impose_plugin.rco
  • Contains the volume graphics, mute icon.

I’ll try and add to the list as and when I come across new things or new information becomes available.

As always, if you are going to customise the look of your PSP, make sure you back up your original files first.
